Spotted: GIFF at TIFF

Spotted: A 2008 Gimli Film Festival pass (before we became International) for Winnipeg's own, Guy Maddin! It's not often that Canada's largest rural film festival makes a surprise guest appearance at one of the world's most acclaimed film festivals...

GIFF was pleased to be a delegate at this year at the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival. Amongst the extensive Canadian content, there were 7 Manitoba films screened as part of TIFF's lineup:

- Rumours (dir. Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson)
- Universal Language (dir. Matthew Rankin)
- Aberdeen (Dir. Ryan Cooper and Eva Thomas)
- The Best (dir. Ian Bawa)
- Serve The Country (dir. Fabián Velasco, Miloš Mitrović)
- A Black Screen Too (dir. Rhayne Vermette)
- The Mother and the Bear (dir. Johnny Ma) ** set in Winnipeg

Lastly, Congratulations to Matthew Rankin's Universal Language that won the Best Canadian Discovery Award!

We also want to give a big shout out to Icelandic Director, Rúnar Rúnarsson, who's short film O and narrative feature, When The Light Breaks, had their North American premieres at the festival (as part of the 'Centerpiece' program). Tremendous works for one of the best contemporary Icelandic filmmakers.
