A Monumental Moment for Manitoba Filmmakers!

A still from Matthew Rankin's Universal Language (2024)

In the last 48 hours, Manitoba’s film scene has reached great new heights!

We’d like to extend a big congratulations to:

  • Matthew Rankin, who’s film Universal Language has been picked to represent Canada at the 2025 Oscars! The follow up to his 2019 feature, The Twentieth Century (which won our GIFF 2020 IATSE Local 856 On The Rise Award), Rankin’s second feature is “a lovingly detailed, charmingly impossible story of a Canada where Persian and French are the two official languages and loneliness is the common currency”. Coming off the inaugural Director’s Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes, Matthew continues to make our province proud!

  • Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, who’s highly anticipated trailer for their new film Rumours (starring Cate Blanchett, Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, and more) was released today! Known for their distinctive styles, this latest collaborative work by Maddin-Johnson-Johnson is a surreal journey through a labryinth of whispers and secrets, filled with signature dreamlike imagery. The Canadian premiere will take place next week at the Toronto International Film Festival with a theatrical release slated for October 18th. Congratulations to long time friend of the festival, Guy Maddin, and fellow incredible Winnipeg auteurs Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson!

These achievements are a testament to the talent and creativity that thrive in our province. We couldn’t be more proud of our film industry in Manitoba.

Congratulations to everyone involved with bringing these features to the big screen! Here’s to more success and continued inspiration!
