Film series spotlight --Icelandic Film Series!
We're kicking off our film series spotlights with this year's Icelandic Film Series! GFF has always brought the best in Iceland's contemporary cinema to the Festival and spotlighted it through a dedicated film series. This series is generously sponsored by Pharmasave Gimli.
The first film in our series is The Deposit, The (Tryggð) which is director Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir first feature film. The film follows investigative journalist Gisella when she becomes bankrupt. She then decides to rent out her spare bedrooms to two immigrant women, seeing a way out of debt and potential material for her next writing piece. The arrangement begins well for all parties but gradually her tenants begin to threaten Gisella’s control of the house, her morals and her sanity.Sarah Dosa's The Seer and Unseen (pictured above) heads to GFF from Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Amid Iceland’s majestic wilderness, a lava field of ecological importance is about to be demolished by the largest bulldozer in the country. Standing in front of that bulldozer is Ragga, environmentalist and celebrated “seer” into the invisible realm of elves. This film explores the hidden forces that shape our visible worlds and transform our natural landscapes. Variety says "The Seer and the Unseen” [is] a clear, compelling narrative spine, [setting up] a David-versus-Goliath dynamic that should prove irresistible even to viewers who find the huldufólk talk utter hogwash."
For our third film in this series, Woman at War (Kona fer í stríð) directed by Benedikt Erlingsson was best described by The Guardian: "Yet amid the jet-black comedy of Woman at War, which takes as its catastrophic subject matter the despoliation of planet Earth, there is a warmth, wit and wisdom that transcend national and cultural boundaries, making this a truly universal treat." The film follows Halla, a woman in her forties. She declares war on the local aluminum industry to prevent it from disfiguring her country and risks all she has to protect the highlands of Iceland. But, the situation could change with the unexpected arrival of a small orphan in her life.Interested?
