Film Series Spotlight -- Manitoba Film Series!

Our Manitoba Film Series spotlights the best filmmaking coming out of our province and this year, we have quite the line-up!Urban Eclipse: Rising Tides of Kekekoziibii (Shoal Lake 40) directed by Jesse Green & Vanda Fleury-Green. This film follows Green's travels back to his home. The Shoal Lake aqueduct is a major artery piping drinking water to homes in Winnipeg. But its history speaks to a dirty truth for Kekekoziibii, the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation who was displaced, isolated and robbed of its own drinking water. Green returns home and interviews people about the impacts of the aqueduct in the 100 years since it was built.  Danielle Sturk's latest film, El Toro, returns home after screening at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. The Winnipeg Free Press gave the film a 4-star review saying "Sturk...basically blow(s) up documentary conventions in ways both whimsically weird and seriously avant-garde." This documentary follows the filmmaker's family history of their St. Boniface truck stop diner, El Toro, located between Canada Packers and the Union Stockyards in the 1960s and 70s. The film rebuilds the walls, stools, and atmosphere of the restaurant, recreating a surreal, rich, and imaginative world, evoking a lost time and place through the lens of memory, nostalgia and love. We're excited to screen Mike Maryniuk's latest film The GOOSE! Festival du Nouveau Cinema says "(The Goose) finds his liberation in ventriloquism, time travel by fax, trippy conversations, stop-motion animation, vintage computers and arcade games. Maryniuk manipulates imagery like a maestro, layering on techniques in a delirious jumble. Pure punk." The Goose is a mute young man who attempts to regain his voice and escape his oppressive surroundings with the help of The Travel Agent. The Goose must traverse a gauntlet of miscommunication, small town bravado and snowbird weirdos to achieve his goal. He meets The Escape Artist in the hospital and they hatch a plot to migrate to Arizona, where The Goose can receive voice therapy and The Escape Artist can escape winter’s clutches.Maryniuk is also hosting a SHOOT Super 8 mm Workshop at this year's fest with Josh Marr! No experience required. 2018 Festival's Best Manitoba Director presented by the Directors' Guild of Canada, Shelagh Carter, is back with her latest film Into Invisible Light! Her latest fiction feature film follows Helena. When Helena’s husband dies and she is unexpectedly drawn into an encounter with a past lover, she is inspired to reawaken a long-buried desire to write.   And, Manitoba's greatest short film competition is back --Manitoba Shorts in Competition presented by Manitoba Film & Music and supported by Johnston Group!
