With over 100 films to see (not to mention all the extra events), it can be overwhelming to pick and choose which ones to take in. So, we’ve compiled a list of our top ten must see things during this year’s Film Festival!
#1. It goes without saying that people love our RBC Sunset Screenings. Every night at 10 p.m. make your way down to Gimli Beach, BYOB (bring your own blanket) and take in a free movie on the big screen in the water. Wednesday night’s kick off film A League of Their Own is sure to be a homerun hit.
#2. Our Northern Lights Film Series and Icelandic Film Series highlight some of the amazing films that come out of Iceland and other circumpolar nations. This series connects viewers to the town of Gimli’s Icelandic heritage.
Don’t forget to reserve your tickets.
#3. On Sunday at 10 a.m. watch the screening debuts for many young filmmakers who took part in the Movie Magic Camp put on by Manitoba Theatre for Young People here in Gimli.
#4. Sink your fangs into our special event: Rock & Roll Movie Night. This is a screening of the classic 1922 vampire film Nosferatu with a live soundtrack played by JUNO and Polaris Prize award nominated band Shooting Guns. If you are a Super Pass or Filmmaker Pass holder this event is free. For people who don’t have one of these passes the cost is only $20 a ticket.
#5. Watch any (or all) of the 18 films made for the WFG 48 Hour Film Contest. Each film was made with a 48-hour time constraint and what we can only assume was a lot of caffeine. The final product… nothing short of spectacular. Reserve your ticket now!
#6. On Sunday make your way to Gimli Theatre for a re-screening of the film voted Best of Fest by our movie-goers and presented by Outlet Collection Winnipeg! At the end of each film audience members are encouraged to rate the movie on their way out to be eligible for a $10 coupon to Outlet Collection Winnipeg!
#7. Check out the RBC Beach Boardwalk from 7:30 – 9:30 on Friday and Saturday. Activities, giveaways and free kid’s games will be available during this time before the RBC Sunset Screenings. GFF will also have a table with our 2018 merch and raffle tickets. Check out more of our free stuff here.
#8. Watch five finalists battle it out at the RBC $10,000 Emerging Filmmaker Pitch Competition! Each finalist will pitch for a chance to win funding to make their short film idea come true. The competition is free to watch, takes place on Saturday at 10 a.m. and hosts the world premiere of last year’s winners Nicola Baldwin and Miles Crossman’s film If It Ain’t Got.
#9. Watch films from our The Future is Female Film Series. This year 46 per cent of films we screen are directed or written by a woman! The work of these women represents some of the best talent in the film industry and we are proud to showcase these works.
#10. Lastly, but not least, take in the quaint town of Gimli. Gimli Film Festival is lucky to be located in a supportive and beautiful community. Make sure you visit the Viking statue, eat some Lake Winnipeg pickerel, or just take a walk down the pier.
