Hiring – Short Film Programmer

2022 Gimli International Film Festival

Overview:

The Short Film Programmer reports to the Executive Director and working with the Programming Team, is responsible to preview all submitted short films as well as research, curate, coordinate and execute selection of all short film programming for the 22nd annual Gimli International Film Festival, July 20-24, 2022.

This is a part-time contract position that is goals based within a timeline and set deadlines. It is full-time during the week of the festival.

General Responsibilities:

A Programmer would be required to assess film submissions and/or researched films based on their overall technical quality (audio & visual), along with the artistic value of the film’s elements. The Programmer would work within a team (and for specific programs, an independent jury) to curate the festival’s content.

Duties of Film Programmer:

  • Research, curate, book and overall manage all Short Films at the 2022 Gimli International Film Festival, including:
    • Assembling and overseeing the Manitoba Shorts in Competition jury (at least 3 jurors from diverse backgrounds)
    • Research and curation of 2 additional thematic shorts programs, each including local, Canadian and International short films.
  • Communicate with filmmakers/distributors and book and negotiate all screening fees of film series listed above (shorts generally paid according to the IMAA fee schedule and within a prescribed budget).
  • Communicate with filmmakers to facilitate Q&A’s, panel discussions, and talks as necessary.
  • Manage potential volunteers
  • Collaborate on incoming/outgoing print traffic for the films and film series listed above and help the Programming Coordinator to maintain a detailed print traffic spreadsheet.
  • Coordinate film ratings for the film series listed above.
  • Collaborate with the GIFF Programming Team to coordinate the film schedule and input the schedule data into the online database for all film series mentioned above.
  • Write/review copy and input information (synopsis, director, runtime, etc.) for selected films into the GIFF online data base.
  • Provide a final report that summarizes your film programming and detail the actions taken by the film programmer including exporting a final list from the database of all films by genre, venue, attendance and complete a SWOT analysis.
  • Be available to work in Gimli during the week of the festival, hosting Q&A’s, providing support, and representing the festival at various events.
  • Other duties as required and agreed upon.

Qualifications:

  • Good understanding of the local and global filmmaking community and industry. 
  • A cumulative of two years experience programming or curating for film festivals or arts organizations, or relative experience may be considered.
  • At least three years involvement in the Manitoban, national or international film/arts community.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to take initiative, show good judgment, be self-motivated and manage projects from beginning to end.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral, with comfort in public speaking.
  • Exceptional ability to manage details and multitask in a fast–paced environment and meets deadlines.
  • Experience in event and volunteer management a definite asset.
  • Technical A/V or video editing skills a considerable benefit.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Contract Terms:

  • Start date: March 1, 2022
  • End date: July 29, 2022
  • This is an independent contractor position. The independent contractor understands and agrees to the responsibility of their own CRA payments and reporting.
  • Contract Fee: $5000, disbursed in 5 monthly installments of $1000 each at the end of March, April, May, June & July, upon receipt of invoice.
