Three Thousand
Short Film (< 75 mins)
Documentary
Directed by Asinnajaq (Isabella-Rose Weetaluktuk) Weetaluktuk
A child, absorbed in a game, watches a top carved out of ice spin on the snowy ground. It is a magical image of great simplicity, discovered by Asinnajaq (Isabella-Rose Weetaluktuk) among the extensive film archives of the National Film Board, which has been documenting the Inuit’s changing ways of life since the 1920s. Weaving together old and new footage with dreamlike animated sequences and a soft, sensuous soundtrack, the director crafts an impressive poem in tribute to her culture and native land. She gives the film a captivating pace, pausing to admire the beauty of traditional life before jumping into an imagined future bathed in the colours of the aurora borealis. An inspired and enchanting short film.
