GFF 2018 - Future is Female* Mentorship Program participants on the bus

Day 7 – 12 Days of Giving

We’re heading into the home stretch! On Day 7 of the 12 Days of Giving, we’re celebrating the Future is Female* Mentorship Program and Future is Female* Film Series! The film series and mentorship program were part of our initiatives to bolster women-driven cinema at the 2018 Festival.

Local production companies united to support this initiative by sponsoring the Future is Female* Film Series! This series showcased feature films directed by some of the best emerging female filmmakers working today. Thank you to Winnipeg’s most successful production companies who collaboratively sponsored this series: Original PicturesInferno PicturesBlack Watch EntertainmentBuffalo Gal PicturesCanadian Media Producers AssociationFarpoint FilmsFrantic FilmsMedia RendezVous, Merit Motion Pictures and Rebecca Gibson.

In 2018, our programming committee accepted the challenge of ensuring 40-60% of all films programmed at GFF would be written or directed by women. And, we are proud to announce that 46% of the films that played at the 2018 Festival were directed or written by a woman!

At this year’s fest, we launched the first-ever Future is Female* Mentorship program. The program brought over 50 women-identifying and non-binary media artists, filmmakers, writers, actors and film technicians on a bus from Winnipeg to the Festival for a full day of programming at no cost to the participants!

Special thanks to Vital Transit, Women In View, Winnipeg Film Group, Rebecca Gibson and On Screen Manitoba for sponsoring and supporting this program along with all of the participants! Their feedback will help us evolve the program for the 2019 Festival!
