2023 RBC Pitch Competition

12th Annual RBC $10,000 Emerging Filmmaker Pitch Competition

Gimli International Film Festival, in partnership with RBC and On Screen Manitoba, is thrilled to reveal the finalists for the highly anticipated 12th Annual RBC $10,000 Emerging Filmmaker Pitch Competition. This year witnessed an extraordinary number of submissions, with a record-breaking 33 entries from emerging filmmakers across Manitoba. The finalists, selected by an independent pre-selection jury, will have the opportunity to present their short film ideas to a panel of esteemed industry professionals and a live audience during the Gimli International Film Festival on Saturday, July 29 at 10:00 a.m.

The 2023 Finalists

The five finalists who made it through the rigorous selection process:

Catherine Dulude – “Petit mollusque”
Sarah Luby – “Night Terrors”
Reed Makayev – “Interloper”
Farrah Murdock – “Regalia”
Ethan Stark – “Haircut”

The 2023 Judges

This year, the judges are ones of high profile within the cinematic community and are eager to share their professional advice. GIFF is thrilled to welcome the following judges to the competition this year:

Guy Maddin – Canadian filmmaker from Winnipeg with Icelandic heritage, Guy has a strong connection to Gimli and history with the festival.

Elizabeth Klinck – distinguished producer, researcher, and clearance specialist

Sarah Simpson-Yellowquill – Indigenous filmmaker and the Program Manager at the National Screen Institute. She has served as the mentor for the winning filmmaker of the competition for the last two years.

The Pitch Competition: During the live pitch competition, each finalist will have three minutes to present their film idea to the jury, followed by a three-minute question period. The jury, consisting of seasoned industry professionals, will ultimately choose one filmmaker to receive a prize package that includes $10,000 in production funds from RBC, a mentorship opportunity from the National Screen Institute – Canada, a $5,000 Equipment Rental Grant Certificate courtesy of William F. White International, a $1,000 equipment credit and free membership from the Winnipeg Film Group, and a premiere screening of their film at the 2024 Gimli International Film Festival.

Recognition for Finalists: While only one filmmaker will be awarded the grand prize, each of the finalists will receive commendable benefits for their participation. They will be granted a one-year membership with On Screen Manitoba, a day pass to On Screen Manitoba’s annual industry forum, All Access 2024, and an Industry Pass to the 2023 Gimli International Film Festival.

Supporting Emerging Filmmakers: Alan Wong, the Executive Director of GIFF, expressed his enthusiasm for the competition, stating, “The contest has become one of the most important and exciting funding opportunities for emerging filmmakers in the province. With our partners, RBC, On Screen Manitoba, William F. White International, the National Screen Institute, and the Winnipeg Film Group, GIFF is proud to have supported so many filmmakers over the years, many of whom have gone on to establish respectable careers in the film industry. It is truly a highlight of the festival.”

Through RBC Emerging Artists, we support the best opportunities for diverse artists to accelerate their career trajectory. We look forward to seeing more careers ignite as a result of this competition and are excited to hear the pitches from this year’s deserving finalists.”
