2021 Greetings:

The Honourable Janis G. Johnson

Chair, Founder, Gimli Film Festival

As Chair of the Gimli Film Festival, I want to welcome all film lovers to our 21st annual Festival. I hope you enjoy the exceptional films, special events and professional development opportunities we’ve got lined up for you.

Running from July 12-25th, our festival is virtual for the second time due to the pandemic. However, as long-term Festival-goers will notice, we’re excited to have doubled the length of GFF this year! This means audiences have twice as long to check out the fantastic programming available through GFF On Demand.

Additionally, this year we’re excited to able to hold six in-person film screenings at the RBC Sunset Drive-in Theatre. These screenings run from July 21-25th and are sure to give audiences their dose of summertime nostalgia.

We’re also pleased to be able to celebrate our province through showcasing special Manitoba 150 programming, which has been held over from last year due to Covid-19. Audiences can look forward to our Manitoba Film Retrospective and the unveiling of 11 new Manitoba-made films which were commissioned by GFF for MB150!

In line with our goal of supporting the future of film, this year GFF is partnering with On Screen Manitoba and Film Training Manitoba to offer a series of five workshops designed to advance emerging and established film industry professionals along their path. With an extended calendar full of learning opportunities and special events like our Opening Reception, which will be held in a virtual Town of Gimli, this year’s Festival promises to be action-packed.

We are cautiously optimistic and are looking forward to hosting an in-person Festival in 2022. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to beach screenings, live industry events and to see folks excitedly line up outside our wonderful venue partners to see fantastic films from all over the world. It will be tremendous! However, in our 21st year, relax in the comfort of your home (or car if you snagged a coveted spot at the RBC Sunset Drive-in) and enjoy GFF 2021!

Finally, I want to thank the GFF Board, staff and volunteers for their extraordinary efforts. Above all I want to thank our Festival Director, Aaron Zeghers, for his leadership and vision steering the Festival through this difficult time for the second year in a row.

We hope you enjoy our programming and that our Festival will be a highlight of your season as summer comes back to life in Manitoba this year. See you in 2022!

The Honourable Janis G. Johnson

A celebration of artistry in film, festivals provide an important venue to showcase Canadian creativity across the country and beyond. That is why we are proud to support The Gimli Film Festival.

This past year more than ever, Canada has shown the many innovative and resourceful ways in which we make our audiovisual sector thrive. We have given the world many reasons to take notice of Canada and why we continue to be a Partner of Choice!

Our mission to foster and elevate authentic storytelling from Canadians of all backgrounds, especially those of underrepresented communities, is more pressing than ever before. At Telefilm, our priority to create a more representative screen-based industry continues as our efforts across all our initiatives, including our funding programs, increase.

Stronger together, I want to thank and congratulate The Gimli Film Festival for continuing its work of uplifting a diversity of voices through films and celebrating the brilliance of Canadian content at home and around the world.

As always, continue to watch Canadian films wherever they are available and tell others to do the same!
