2020 Greetings

The Honourable Janis G. Johnson

Chair, Founder, Gimli Film Festival

As Chair of the Gimli Film Festival, I want to welcome film lovers across the world to our 20th annual festival. I hope you enjoy the exceptional films, panels and discussions that will be online from July 21-26.

Our festival is virtual for the first time in our history due to the pandemic and while not ideal it is going to be a great show!

As you can imagine we had a big celebration planned for this year and our anniversary also coincided with Manitoba’s 150th anniversary as a province. We were all working together to make 2020 a memorable year.

Well, it is, but not as we expected!! Our Board met and after much discussion about what to do we accepted the dramatic turn of events and forged ahead determined to keep our festival going no matter what it took. It has always been our strength to ride the waves and we are doing it again.

I love nothing better at festival time than seeing our theatre venues in Gimli alive with film goers and then at sunset watching movies on the beach with hundreds and sometimes thousands of others. Those nights are magical with waves lapping the shore and the skies filled with stars and Northern Lights as the huge screen, set offshore in the Lake, lights up the night.

It will be full steam ahead again next year and we cannot wait to welcome everyone. It will be tremendous but for now, in our 20th year, relax in the comfort of your home and have a wonderful 5 days with us.

I want to thank the GFF Board, staff and volunteers for their extraordinary efforts and above all our Festival Director, Aaron Zeghers, for his leadership and vision in a most challenging time for all of us.

We hope our efforts will make your summer a little brighter, fun and interesting as well as entertaining. See you in 2021!

The Honourable Janis G. Johnson

A Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

For 20 years now, the Gimli Film Festival (GFF) has treated movie fans to an unforgettable cinematic experience, in the natural splendour of Manitoba’s beautiful Interlake.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic means we cannot take in everything this wonderful festival has to offer in person, but thanks to the creativity, hard work and determination of GFF’s staff, volunteers and board of directors, we can do it virtually.

As long-time cottage owners in the area, my family and I will miss the flurry of activity that festival visitors bring to Gimli each summer, but we have many more reasons to look forward to this year’s festival. I am very pleased that the tireless efforts of festival organizers will enable more Manitobans to participate in the GFF than ever before. I am even more excited that the virtual festival will allow Manitoba film buffs to share our love of the movies and our province’s stunning array of talent with the rest of the world.

As the Queen’s representative in Manitoba, I offer my sincere congratulations to everyone who has played a role, big or small, in ensuring the ongoing success of the Gimli Film Festival. I wish you all a happy 20th anniversary, and look forward to celebrating this wonderful event for years to come.

The Honourable Janice C. Filmon, C.M., O.M.

Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

A Message from the Minister

As Manitoba’s Minister of Sport, Culture and Heritage, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 20th anniversary edition of the renowned Gimli Film Festival (GFF).

For 20 years, this festival has entertained, inspired and enlightened audiences of all ages, drawing thousands of tourists to this picturesque Interlake community, to experience and enjoy the magic of film.

As you know, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we are living in extraordinary times, so the popular social aspect of the festival cannot be safely accommodated. Undaunted, and to their great credit, the festival organizers believed that the show must go on. This year, instead of gathering together in crowded theatres, festival goers will participate virtually, enjoying world-class films, live Q&A’s, and panel discussions with filmmakers – all in the comfort of their own homes!

Through prairie ingenuity, Gimli Film Festival is able to share the festival with the entire world, thereby ensuring their annual celebration of cinema will continue for another year.

Congratulations to the Gimli Film Festival board of directors, staff and volunteers for twenty years of wonderful community spirit, unwavering commitment to festival excellence and your ongoing efforts to promote film and arts appreciation in our province.  I wish you every success with this year’s event and many more to come.

Honourable Cathy Cox

Minister of Sport, Culture and Heritage

Welcome to the Gimli Film Festival!

The 20th edition of this cinematic celebration will be unlike any other, as every film will be screened online. Those who expect the very best films from Canada and beyond will be happy that they can access the festival’s featured works through an on-demand service. For Manitoba’s largest film festival, the show must go on!

Our government knows how important the arts are, especially in these challenging times. Not only do they provide comfort, they also help us share our many diverse stories and understand our beautiful and complex world. That is why we are proud to support this wonderful event.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I would like to congratulate the festival’s organizers and volunteers, who have worked hard to overcome the obvious COVID-19 challenges to keep this signature piece of Gimli culture alive and well.

Enjoy the shows!

The Honourable Steven Guilbeault

Minister of Canadian Heritage

On behalf of the Rural Municipality of Gimli Council and Community, I am honoured to welcome back the 20th Annual Gimli Film Festival.

Due to unfortunate circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic the festival will be different from the years past. We are happy that the film festival is able to proceed with providing a virtual festival this year.

As Mayor of Gimli, I would like to congratulate the Gimli Film Festival who makes the event such a success, year after year. The festival has become a significant attribute to our community.

Please enjoy the virtual festival. We are hopeful that next year we will be able to welcome all the visitors back to the community and have the film festival back in full swing.

Mayor Lynn Greenberg
