Gimli Film Festival 2018 Team

As winter thaws, the Gimli Film Festival team is starting to assemble! On behalf of everyone at the Festival, I’m very excited to welcome a stellar core staff team for the coming season!

We are so very excited to welcome a brand new film programmer in 2018! Vivian Belik is an ex-pat Winnipegger who has most recently been a Film Programmer for the Available Light Film Festival in Whitehorse and previously has been involved with the Hot Docs Film Festival, Regent Park Film Festival, Doc Now Festival in Toronto and has an MFA in Documentary Media Studies from Ryerson University. Vivian will be programming our short films, Icelandic film series and Beach films at this year’s festival!

She’ll be working alongside David Knipe who is returning to the Gimli Film Fest this year as our Senior Film Programmer of feature-length fiction and documentary films. In 2017 David Knipe moved into a film programming role with the festival and quickly proved himself a dynamite programmer. Since then, David has proven to be Manitoba’s most prolific film programmer, continuing his work as Operations Manager of the Winnipeg Cinematheque, programming the 2017 Gimme Some Truth Documentary Film Festival, and assisting this past February in the first ever Afro Prairie Film Festival.

Last but certainly not least, is our brand new Communications & Logistics Manager, Cleo Curtis! Many of you may have already unwittingly recognized her impacts, as she has already taken measured control of GFF’s social media from my frantic and haphazard hands. Cleo has participated in GFF in the past as a filmmaker and a $10,000 Pitch Contestant, and will be assisting our admin team overall with most aspects of the festival including sponsorships, ad sales, and general logistical management of all of our festival events.

As I attempt to fill the very – figuratively – large shoes of our current Festival Director Leona Johnson in the coming months, it is incredibly encouraging to have such an incredible, experienced and diligent team shaping up for 2018 and hopefully for
years to come!

Stay tuned, as we already have a lot of exciting news about the 2018 Festival that we will be sharing in the coming weeks!

**JOB OPPORTUNITIES** with the Gimli Film Festival

The Gimli Film Festival is hiring!

Are you a hard-working leader that wants to gain an incredible experience working in the arts and culture sector?  Are you a self-motivated creative type that would love to spend summertime in cottage country working for the largest film festival in Manitoba?

Then please consider applying for either of the following TWO POSITIONS:

Film Programmer – job description and full details

The Film Programmer reports to the Festival Manager and Senior Film Programmer and is responsible to research, curate, coordinate and execute selection of the Beach Films, the Icelandic Film Series and all short film programming for the 18th annual Gimli Film Festival, July 25-29, 2018.  This part-time position runs from March – August 2018.

As an additional contract, the Film Programmer will also be responsible for managing Guest Services for attending filmmakers, including communicating with filmmakers, booking flights and hotels for out-of-town guests and helping to coordinate all Q&As and special filmmaker meet-ups.

Marketing & Logistics Coordinator – job description and full details

The Marketing & Logistics Coordinator (MLC) reports to the Festival Director and Festival Manager and is responsible for a wide variety of responsibilities that change over this 6-month contract (March – August, 2018).

This part-time position would begin in March focusing on social media relations for the festival, as well as coordinating smaller (often local) sponsorships, as well as coordinating Gimli Film Festival printed program advertisements. In late May, the MLC would help prep, train and manager our incoming Communications Coordinator, who will take over social media responsibilities and press and publicity.

In June, the MLC will shift towards executing the overall logistics plan for the festival, which involves creating a master plan for logistics for all events at the Gimli Film Festival and coordinating staff, volunteers, resources and transportation of goods and services to and from the festival for all festival events.

For details on how to apply, please see the full job descriptions via the links above.

For any questions related to the above positions, feel free to contact us at jobs (at) gimlifilm (dot) com

It’s time again to… SUBMIT YOUR FILM!!

The Gimli Film Festival is excited to announce that our annual call for film submissions is now OPEN!  Earlybird submission rates are in effect until the end of January, so act fast!  The 18th annual festival will take place in Gimli, Manitoba (just north of Winnipeg) from July 25th – 29th, 2018.

In 2017, the Gimli Film Festival (GFF) screened 151 films over the course of our 5-day festival, which included 92 short films and 59 feature films.  In 2018, GFF will continue our spotlights on the best contemporary Canadian, Icelandic and International cinema.  We will also continue our film series of Social Justice Documentaries, Indigenous Perspectives and a strong focus on Manitoba-Made Cinema.  In 2018, GFF plans to take strides towards gender parity at our festival, and so we are strongly urging all emerging and established female directors alike to reach out, contact us and submit their work!

Submissions also accepted via FilmFreeway :

As a festival we work hard to ensure that all films curated as part of the Gimli Film Festival are paid proper screening fees, and in 2017 we were delighted to be able to pay a travel stipend / speaking fee to all filmmakers traveling from across Manitoba and Canada to attend the festival.

We also do our best to provide affordable film submission fees despite the considerable costs of running our annual festival.  Filmmakers are encouraged to submit during the month of January, when our submission fees are at a reduced rate ($8 for short films / $20 for features)!

For questions, comments or concerns about the submission process, please contact our programming team at: submissions (at) gimlifilm (dot) com

Filmmakers are required to submit their feature film (75 mins or longer completed after Jan 1, 2016) using this online link by April 30, 2018. The submission fees are as follows:

$50 | Late Deadline | Apr. 1 – Apr. 30, 2018

Filmmakers/Producers/Distributors are encouraged to submit/pay for one film and then email us to discuss reduced rates for additional films: submissions@gimlifilm.com

The Gimli Film Festival is proud to announce that Aaron Zeghers has been hired as our new full-time Festival Manager!

As Festival Manager, Zeghers will slowly but surely taking over for our outgoing Festival Director Leona Johnson, who will be leaving the Gimli Film Festival after our 2018 festival to pursue a well-earned life of leisure.

Since 2013, Zeghers has been the Film Programmer for the festival, alongside Johnson as Festival Director.  Together the two saw a 21% increase in overall festival attendance since 2014, with total attendance surpassing 11,000 in 2017.

Zeghers is the founder of the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival and the former Board President of the Winnipeg Film Group.  As a filmmaker, Zeghers’ films have screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam, DOXA Documentary Film Fest (Vancouver), Ann Arbor Film Festival, Mono No Aware (New York), Berlin Director’s Lounge and Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinema among many others. In the past two years he has traveled extensively, performing his expanded cinema work live in New York, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Toronto, Vancouver, Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis and more.

Zeghers’ new position within the festival is part of the Gimli Film Festival‘s increased dedication to succession planning within the organization, which has been generously supported in 2017/18 by the Winnipeg Foundation.
